Civil War lectures presented at both GCC Medina and Albion Campus Centers

Genesee Community College offers two Civil War lectures this fall at its Orleans County Campus Centers in Medina and Albion. These lectures are part of the College’s Civil War Initiative, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the war. The lectures, on September 22 and October 21, begin at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Each will shed light on interesting aspects of the Civil War (1861-1865).

On Monday, September 22 at the Medina Campus Center, George McGaughey will discuss “Myths and More at Gettysburg.” No Civil War battlefield is more famous, at least in the north, than Gettysburg. To many, it is sacred ground that warrants many visits and careful study, and like any other historical landscape, it is prone to myths and legends. In this talk, McGaughey will explore the basis of those myths and the many discoveries he has made as a frequent visitor. His findings will surprise even the most knowledgeable Civil War  buff.

GCC’s Medina Campus Center is located at 11470 Maple Ridge Road in Medina.

On Tuesday, October 21 at the Albion Campus Center, GCC Assistant Professor of History Derek Maxfield presents “Marching through the Heart of the Confederacy: Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign and the March to the Sea.” From a strategic perspective, few southern cities were more vital to the Confederate war effort than Atlanta. Sherman’s drive on Atlanta and subsequent march to the sea are a fascinating chapter in Civil War history. Besides knocking the heart out of the Confederacy, Sherman’s campaigns helped to secure the re-election of Abraham Lincoln and introduced psychological warfare as a means to winning the war.

The Albion Campus Center is located at 456 West Avenue in Albion.

Both events begin at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public. For a complete listing of all Civil War Initiative events, go to: http://www.civilwaratgcc.wordpress.com/. For more information, contact Assistant Professor Maxfield at (585) 343-0055 ext. 6288, or via email: ddmaxfield@genesee.edu.
