Canaligators raise funds for outreach group

Members of the Spencerport Canal Days Canaligator Committee, Lori Antonelli, Alba Alonci and Becky Daniels, presented proceeds raised during last July’s Canaligator Race to Christopher Scribani, Open Door Mission Assistant Director of Development, and Karin Pena, Volunteer Services Manager on Wednesday, February 25. The donation, $2,575 in gift cards, will help purchase personal hygiene items and other needed supplies for the outreach effort.

Open Door Mission is a Christian Rescue Mission founded to provide for the spiritual and physical needs of the impoverished and homeless men, women, and children in the Rochester are by restoring hope and changing lives.

Green plastic alligators, dubbed “Canaligators,” are adopted by festival goers and area residents and float to a finish line on the Erie Canal on the second day of the annual summer festival. Prizes are awarded to the Canaligators that cross the finish line first and last.

Revenue from other sources of the event must be used to pay for things like rented equipment, insurance, and other organizational costs, but all proceeds from Canaligator sales are donated to local projects and good causes as decided by the committee members.
