Brockport community answers call to help those in need

This summer, a longstanding tradition in Brockport will take on new meaning. For more than eight years, an American Red Cross mega blood drive has been held in the Brockport community. This year residents are being asked to help boost the summer blood supply by giving blood and encouraging others to do the same. The “Communities That Care” blood drive is set for Wednesday, July 15 from noon to 7 p.m. at the Sweden Clarkson Community Center at 4927 Lake Road.

It’s often difficult to collect enough blood products for hospital patients in the summer because schools are out of session, and donors are busy with vacations and summer activities. During the months of June, July and August, on average, about two fewer donors than what patients need schedule an appointment at each Red Cross blood drive.

This can add up to more than 100,000 fewer donations during the summer.
Donors of all blood types, especially O negative, A negative and B negative, and platelet donors are needed to help ensure lifesaving blood products are available for patients throughout the summer.  One donation can help save up to three lives.

A “Community That Cares” blood drive is a Red Cross initiative to engage local citizens and boost regional blood supplies by enlisting community support. All presenting donors at the July 15 blood drive will receive a free t-shirt, while supplies last.

Suburban Propane is the official sponsor of the American Red Cross “100 days of summer. 100 days of hope.” campaign and is helping to increase awareness of the constant need for blood and platelet donations. To learn more about Suburban Propane’s community involvement, visit suburbanpropane.com.

A blood donor card, driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
