Brockport resident receives educational and athletic award

Marissa J. Sell of Brockport received the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYS AHPERD) Jay B. Nash Outstanding Major Award for 2015.  Marissa, a senior at Roberts Wesleyan College majoring in physical education with a minor in psychology, is also a three-sport athlete who has successfully managed athletics and academics throughout her college career.

As Vice President of the Physical Education Majors Club since freshman year, Marissa has organized and participated in numerous events including: a Heart Walk, Student Education Association Parade, 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, Volleyball Tournament, I Care Easter Egg Hunt and a Dunk Tank Fundraiser.  Additionally, she has participated in Relay for Life, Make a Wish Lacrosse Game and the Adopt a School Program.

Marissa has been involved in numerous volunteer activities and fundraisers, such as, Athletes in Action, Roberts Basketball Team fundraiser and a Wounded Warrior Game.  She presented and presided at NYS AHPERD and Central Western Zone Conferences.  Marissa also received recognition as a Scholar Athlete, East Region Player of the year, First Team All Conference and First Team All American by the National Christian College Athletics Association.

One of her professors describes Marissa as, “a great student who demonstrates an excellent work ethic and dedication to her studies.  She has been successful at juggling sports, academics and work.  She has become a leader and sets an excellent example for her peers.”

The NYS AHPERD Jay B. Nash Outstanding Major Award goes to one male and one female graduating senior majoring in health, physical education, recreation or dance.  The purpose of the Jay B. Nash Outstanding Major Award is to help the recipient develop professionalism through continued studies and association with other professionals.
