New York legends and folklore celebrated on roadside markers

The William G. Pomeroy Foundation invites communities across New York State to celebrate folklore with fully funded commemorative signage through its Legends & Lore roadside marker grant program.

Launched in partnership with the New York Folklore Society, the Legends & Lore program is designed to promote cultural tourism and commemorate legends and folklore as an important part of our cultural heritage.

The Pomeroy Foundation is now accepting applications for the program’s latest grant round. Application materials for Legends & Lore markers are available on the Foundation’s website: www.wgpfoundation.org. The deadline for applying is Wednesday, October 31, 2018.

Since the program’s launch in 2015, the Pomeroy Foundation has helped more than 35 communities in New York to commemorate their own fascinating local stories.

One of those Legends & Lore markers celebrates Ichabod Crane and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” It’s said that this famous Washington Irving character was based on a real schoolteacher in Kinderhook, New York.

What great narratives in this region should be told? Help put the spotlight on those unique stories with a Legends & Lore roadside marker. Municipalities and charitable 501(c)(3) organizations in New York are welcome to apply. Local historical organizations or municipal historians will often apply on behalf of property owners.
