Orleans County 4-Hers participate in cooking competition

Twenty Orleans County 4-Hers took part in the Produced in New York (PiNY) silent cooking competition Saturday, November 3, in the Trolley Building on the 4-H Fairgrounds.

The annual event helps celebrate New York State agriculture and promotes the use of nutritious, locally grown foods.

“Produced in New York is a 4-H event which gives youth ages 8-19 the opportunity to demonstrate their food preparation skills, and at the same time promote healthful, tasty products grown and produced in New York State,” says Kristina Gabalski, Orleans County 4-H Program Coordinator.  “Our 4-Hers enjoy coming together for this event each November.”

Participants are evaluated on both their demonstration/cooking skills and the taste and nutritional value of the finished product.  Participants complete a menu plan which details their recipe, its nutritional value and the featured product from New York State.

The program includes several age and skill levels including Clover Buds (ages 5-7); Junior Novice and Juniors (ages 8-12) and Senior Novice and Seniors (ages 13-19).

Participants who earn the highest combined scores are eligible to participate in Produced in New York in the Youth Building at the New York State Fair in August.

Recipes this year featured zucchini, cheese, pumpkin, apples, carrots, ham, pork and chicken.
