Volunteers needed to transcribe books into Braille

There is a need for volunteers to transcribe books and other materials into Braille. The Spencerport Lions Braille Service offers Braille Transcription classes at the Gates/Spencerport Ambulance building, Lyell Avenue, Spencerport. Classes start on September 12, and will meet weekly, Thursday mornings through May.

There is a refundable deposit for use of the Braille equipment; the instructors, teaching manuals and Braille paper is provided at no charge. Students should plan on two hours of homework a day, as they work towards certification as a Braillist by the Library of Congress.

The class provides ongoing support and encouragement as the group meets weekly to proofread each others’ work. This is a rewarding opportunity, to learn a unique new skill and be able to provide reading materials for the reader who is blind.

For more information and to sign up, call instructor Sue Keegan at 967-6702 or Kathy Holden at 392-7753.
