Byron-Bergen advanced level PageTurners compete

The spring competition for advanced level PageTurners was held at Byron-Bergen Central School in late March. Team members representing Byron-Bergen were Melissa Barnard, Chase Bergeron, Laura Bonilla, Celeste Brownell, Sydni Casper, Bethany Ezard, Michaela Kenward, Jerry Menzie, Kelsey Swinter, and Melissa Watson. Under the direction of Advisor Laurie Penepent, Byron-Bergen placed third with 30 points and together with 19 points from the fall competition, they qualified for the Regional Competition held at Byron-Bergen on May 20.

Byron-Bergen was up against their fellow North Division team, Alexander, and the first and second place winners from the South Division, Geneseo, and Pavilion. Coordinated by the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership Enrichment Department, advanced level PageTurners is a literature-based competition for students in grades 9-12. Students prepare to answer questions by reading speeches, short stories, poems, and novels from a list of chosen titles which is prepared by a committee of teachers and librarians. Geneseo was the overall winner at the Regional Competition and even though Byron-Bergen was down by three players, the team finished a respectable fourth.
