State DOH approves Strong West’s surgical center

Officials at UR Medicine say construction should begin in April on the new ambulatory surgical center (ASC) planned for Strong West in Brockport. The ASC is expected to be open by late summer or early fall.

The State Department of Health Public Health and Health Planning Council gave its approval February 13 for UR Medicine’s Strong Memorial Hospital to proceed with plans for the surgical center. A final review by the state’s Bureau of Architecture and Engineering will take place over the next several weeks.

Bradford C. Berk, M.D., Ph.D., CEO of UR Medicine, said officials are grateful the state is allowing Strong to move forward with the project.

“Our goal is to revive specialized health care services in the Brockport community and this is another positive step in bringing some surgical options closer to home for area residents,” he said.

The surgical center project will include upgrades to three operating rooms and renovations to an adjacent pre- and post-op patient care area. Same-day procedures performed will include surgical and GI procedures, UR Medicine officials said.

Work also continues between the University of Rochester Medical Center and the DOH to gain approval for a full service freestanding Emergency Department(ED) at Strong West.

The state is developing specialized requirements for this new health care model, officials say, as institutions across New York are considering opening freestanding ED’s.

Strong submitted updated design drawings and other details requested by the State the week of February 10. A decision could come this spring from the DOH, although there is no timeframe for approval of the Strong West ED.

Strong West consists of urgent care centers in Brockport and Spencerport; Orthopaedic, Cardiology, Neurology, Urology, Oncology, and Primary Care practices; as well as lab and Imaging services that support Brockport area physicians.
