Young Republicans donate to Riga Legion’s “Raise the Roof” campaign

The “Raise the Roof” fundraising campaign for the Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post in Riga received a boost recently with a major donation from the Riga Young Republicans and their advisor, Steve Brew.

Legion members say a check for $1,700 was donated to help the Post move closer to its goal of raising enough funds to cover the cost of a needed roof replacement for the Post home located on Buffalo Road.

Young Republicans representatives Samantha Walker and Amanda Brew said their fundraiser was conducted to support the community.  Samantha’s brother, Cody, is a Marine, and Amanda interned at the VA Hospital in Buffalo and both said helping the Legion was a clear choice.

Samantha explained that her favorite patriotic holiday is Memorial Day, as it brings to mind the sacrifices of those who lost their lives serving. Amanda added that she feels it is important to make people aware of what veterans have done to protect our freedoms, and to show them our respect. “We are grateful for the opportunities and the freedoms we all enjoy as Americans, thanks to our veterans,” both said.

While working at the VA hospital, Amanda said she observed the incredible resilience of veterans despite the many issues they face.

The “Raise the Roof” campaign began one year ago and Legion members say the community has been very supportive of its various fundraisers. Additionally, a large number of cash donations have been received along with heartwarming notes of thanks to the Legion for supporting the community by conducting Memorial Day and Veterans Day services, or recalling wedding receptions and other events held at the Legion home.

In thanking the representatives of the Riga Young Republicans, Commander Gil Budd said the Legion is both honored and grateful to be chosen as the recipient of their fundraising efforts.
