Brockport Merchants Association President Darrell Stewart, owner of the Stewart Insurance Agency, presented a check for $2,200 to Linda Kruchten-Merring (shown in photo) and Brockport Food Shelf directors Kathy and Mike Hayes. The money was raised during the Brockport Merchants Association Wine Walk held in March of each year. The Brockport Merchants join together to host a community event that provides an opportunity to raise funds for local organizations like the Brockport Food Shelf.

Through the generosity of individuals, corporations, service organizations, school groups and Foodlink, the Brockport Food Shelf is able to provide to households in need, once a month, their choice of fresh produce, meats, canned goods, as well as personal care/hygiene products and cleaning agents. They often offer holiday extras and provided a back pack program through the school. A delivery program is offered for the housebound.

The Brockport Food Shelf, located in St. Luke’s Church, 14 State Street, serves households in the Brockport Central School District south of Route 104. Those in need can call 585-637-8169 and leave a message. Someone from the Food Shelf will return the call. Volunteers have information about similar community food pantries in the area for those outside of their immediate service area.

Food shelves, and the dedicated volunteers, provide nutritious foods to those who are down on their luck and in need, with the hope that it will lift them and help them get to the point where they are able to provide for themselves.

There are several ways the community can assist the Brockport Food Shelf with it’s mission. Food donations are accepted on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 to 6:30 p.m. The foods most needed at this time are chunky soups, pasta of all varieties and rice or pasta sides. Monetary donations can be made online. Visit brockportfoodshelf.org for information.
