DOT turns down request for turning lane on Sweden Walker Road

The NYS DOT has turned down a request from Sweden Supervisor Kevin Johnson to install a northbound left-hand turn lane on Sweden Walker Road onto East Avenue. The denial cites a crash history of less than one northbound left-turn crash per year. The study also states that vehicles turning left were able to turn during the allotted green time during the peak hours.

Supervisor Johnson challenged the decision saying, “adding a turning lane would be a relatively inexpensive fix that would improve safety and ease congestion. Many of our residents commute through that intersection daily, they know the reality of the traffic flow at the intersection.”

Johnson said he and the entire Sweden Town Board, along with the neighboring Towns of Clarkson and Hamlin will continue to advocate for safety improvements along the entire Sweden Walker corridor.
