Students at Quest Elementary School in Hilton have enjoyed fresh reading material all summer long. The school’s first Breakfast and Books event was held three times over the past five weeks to give students an opportunity to borrow books to read over the summer.

Students could select three to 10 books, depending on the student’s age, which they exchanged during each of the sessions and then will bring back to school in the fall. While they browsed, families could enjoy a light breakfast of granola bars, fruit and juice provided by the PTSO. Since construction is taking place at the school, Jennejahn Lodge behind the school provided the perfect venue for the events.

As a bonus, students could bring home their own copy of The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White, this year’s selection for One School One Book, a program designed to create a shared reading experience within a school community. The books were donated by the Scott Spino Foundation’s Literacy Program. The mission of the Literacy Program is to increase students’ access to literature. Scott Spino, a local teacher, was killed by a drunk driver on October 31, 2004.

Principal Renee Mulrooney said she hopes to have another Breakfast and Books event during winter break and again next summer to help promote reading among her students during school breaks.
