Lauren Dailey, a fifth-grader at Fred W. Hill School, took first place in the 5th and 6th grade category of the Monroe County Volunteer Firemen’s Association Fire Prevention Essay Contest. On Tuesday, March 3, Lauren was presented with a plaque and a check by MCVFA Chairman Mr. Alan C. Way, during a surprise visit to her classroom. Principal Sean Bruno accepted a trophy on behalf of the school to be displayed for the coming year.

One of the primary objectives of the Monroe County Volunteer Firemen’s Association is child safety. The annual essay contest, held for Monroe County students in grades five through eight, is geared toward getting students to think about safety.

“Not everyone can win a prize, but all those who do research for their essay are winners,” said Al Waye. “They have gained knowledge that might save their life or someone else’s life in the future. What they have learned today, they carry for the rest of their lives.”
