Village Elementary families enjoy an evening of reading fun

Several reading assistance therapy dogs gathered in the Parma Public Library and listened intently as students read them stories during the Village Elementary One School, One Book Family Event in Hilton. Families could also check out the Seneca Park Zoomobile displays that included a live bearded dragon, hedgehog, mallard duck and armadillo. Students won prizes by completing a reading-related scavenger hunt; and the library was on hand to help people sign up for library cards. Students also got crafty by making their own journals and creating fingerprint animal art in the art room.

One School, One Book is a program designed to create a shared reading experience within a single elementary school community. Schools choose a chapter book, every family in the school receives a copy, and every family reads that book at home over the course of a single month. This year’s book selection was The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate.

The evening event allows the opportunity for families to enjoy activities related to the book and reading together.
