Northwood classes choose to reduce and reuse

Coleen MacCracken’s and Jennifer Sica’s fifth grade classes at Northwood Elementary School in Hilton learned how to recycle, reuse items and reduce what ends up in landfills during their ecology unit.

Students researched ways they can reduce, reuse and recycle in all areas of their daily lives, then created a project made with only recycled materials. Some students made helpful household items, like a bench or bird feeder, and others created art. All of the items were displayed in the cafeteria where students talked about what inspired their creation.

The second part of the project was a fashion show during which students wore hand-me-downs and/or clothing purchased from used clothing stores. During the fashion show, students presented facts about the importance of reusing, recycling and reducing waste.
