Spencerport students compete at NYS Distributive Education Clubs of America

On March 8 through 10, the Spencerport High School DECA chapter competed in the New York State competition held in downtown Rochester.

Representing SHS was senior, Steven Holko; juniors, Abby Spielman, Frankie Melito and Lindsay Gallagher; and sophomores, Elizabeth Ferrari and Chris Ferrari. The students competed against more than 2,000 students from across the state with the following outstanding results:

Abby Spielman – won three medals for placing in the top 10 in New York State in the Marketing Communications Event. Medals are for top 10 test score, top 10 role-play score, and top 10 overall.

Lindsay Gallagher – won three medals for placing in the top 10 in New York State in the Quick Serve Restaurant Management Event. Medals are for top 10 test score, top 10 role-play score, and top 10 overall.

Chris Ferrari – won 3 medals for placing in the top 10 in New York State in the Sports and Entertainment Marketing Event. Medals are for top 10 test score, top 10 role-play score, and top 10 overall.

Steven Holko was inducted into the New York State DECA Honor Society for his outstanding academic achievements and his accomplishments at DECA Regional, State, and International Competitions. Steven also placed second in New York State this year in the Personal Financial Literacy Event. Due to his performance, Steven qualifies to compete in the DECA International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California from April 26 through 29.

The Ranger Cub House, the school store at Spencerport High School, was among 360 school-based enterprises in the United States achieving Gold Level Certification this year and will be recognized at DECA’s International Career Development Conference.

The students who worked on the certification were seniors Brittany Ellison, Nicole Ellison and Rachel Ellison, with the assistance of their advisor, Melissa Garofalo. The school-based enterprise at Spencerport High School has operated for over 20 years. Brittany, Nicole and Rachel have earned the opportunity to attend the SBE Academy at the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim from April 26 through 29, where they will compete against other Gold Level Certified School Based Enterprises in that event.

The Spencerport chapter of DECA is advised by Melissa Garofalo, a business teacher at Spencerport High School.
