Help build awareness among motorists for student safety

The Spencerport Central School District will host this year’s Operation Safe Stop on Thursday, April 27 at 10 a.m. behind Cosgrove Middle School, 2707 Spencerport Road, Spencerport.

The event, held in partnership with New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) and Rochester Area Transportation Supervisors Association (RATSA), is designed to raise awareness of the dangers of motorists passing a stopped school bus. Local police, emergency agencies, bus drivers and civic leaders will hold a press conference and a re-enactment of a pedestrian bus accident.

Fast facts:

•Operation Safe Stop Education and Enforcement Day is Thursday, April 27.

•As many as 50,000 motor vehicles illegally pass New York State school buses every day.

•It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus when the large red lights located on top of the bus are flashing. Flashing lights mean the bus is picking up or discharging students.

•One must stop whether approaching the school bus from the front or overtaking it from the rear.

•One must always stop for flashing red lights, even on divided and multilane highways and on school grounds.
