Celebrating the holidays with dance at Churchville-Chili Elementary School

Students at Churchville-Chili Elementary School were greeted by some very special guest instructors during their recent physical education classes. Older students from Churchville-Chili High School’s Dance II and Dance Excel classes were on hand to share their passion for dancing with the younger children. Over the course of two days, young and old came together for healthy movement and creative expression. Every student at CES had the chance to perform and experience the joy of dance.

The district’s dance outreach program has been part of the holidays since 2011, starting first at Fairbanks Road Elementary School. This year, teachers Bethany Matsko and Matthew Lapinski organized the event for students at CES.

Dance II students prepared for their teaching assignment by creating their own original choreography to the jazzy song, “Hot Chocolate,” (from the movie, “The Polar Express”). They began their lesson by setting the atmosphere with their own festive dance presentation. Then they taught the simple but fun routine to the younger students. The session culminated in an enthusiastic performance by everyone together.

“It is a great experience for both the elementary and the high school students,” said dance instructor Janelle Hernandez. “The high school students enjoy working with the younger students and help make a connection through dance. It’s amazing to see the connections made in such a short period of time.”

Churchville-Chili’s High School dance program gives interested students an opportunity to explore a wide array of dance genres and styles, along with dance history and choreography. It is a great option for students to work together and create pieces of art they can call their own.

The annual student dance recital features solos, duets and class routines from many talented young dancers. This year, the performance will be June 5, 2019 at 7 p.m. in the C-C PAC. It is free and open for the community.
