Rangers grapplers win for co-title; Brockport rebounds at Hilton

Spencerport came back from a 16-0 deficit largely thanks to pins from Mason Wersinger, Kyle McCann and Elliott Cherniss to defeat Brockport 33-28 and win a share of the Monroe County Division II regular season wrestling title with Webster-Thomas and the Blue Devils. It marks their first title since the 2011-12 season.

Tyler Daly and Cody Anders both easily won their 99 lb. and 106 lb. bouts 7-1 and 12-1 respectively, Gabe Horton won via fall in 3:11 at 113 lb. and Jake Davies had a first period takedown and a second period reverse in his 4-1 victory at 120 lb. to stake the Blue Devils to a 16-0 lead.

Spencerport co-captain Ty Mitchell was bumped up a weight class and won his 126 lb. match with four takedowns 9-1.

Brockport’s Tyler Davies registered a takedown at the third period buzzer to eke out a 5-4 win at 132 lb., but the Rangers won seven of the next eight weight classes with Wersinger beginning the rally with a fall in 2:44 at 138 lb.

Michael Vinci managed a late escape to win at 145 lb. 7-6 before Dom Ferranti had takedowns in the first and second period to win 4-0 at 152 lb.

Kyle McCann trailed his 170 lb. bout 8-2 in the second period before he managed a reverse and pin in 3:27. Nick Pinkowski then put the Rangers ahead with a third period escape and a 3-2 decision at 182 lb. and Cherniss, pulled up from junior varsity this season, overcame an early takedown to reverse and pin his opponent in :46 at 195 lb.

Rangers co-captain Ryan Cottom was awarded two penalty points in his match-clinching 3-2 win at 220 lb.

Brockport’s Yhaasic Bringer earlier took a 6-2 decision at 160 lb. and James Baker won via forfeit at 285 lb.

“We’re building back and laying a great foundation; hopefully we’re getting back to the Spencerport way of reloading every year,” Rangers head coach Dan Glover said. “We wrestled smart and all of our kids bought in tonight.”

Five nights later it was Brockport’s turn to come from behind — this time trailing 15-0 — to defeat Division I titlist Hilton 35-33 as they took five of the last six weight classes.

Josh Sharp won a 5-1 decision at 182 lb., Mike Spallina was awarded a forfeit at 195 lb. and Lou DePrez pinned his opponent in 1:06 at 220 lb. to give the host Cadets an early 15-0 advantage.

Baker began the Blue Devils comeback with a 5-2 decision at 285 lb. thanks to a takedown and near fall in the first period before Tyler Daly led 6-0 and hung on for a 6-5 victory at 99 lb. A Hilton forfeit made it 15-12.

Hilton’s Greg Diakomihalis (113 lb.) and senior Austin Hertel (126 lb.) registered falls in 1:25 and 4:48 respectively sandwiching a 6-4 decision by Brockport’s Jake Davies at 120 lb.

That’s when the Blue Devils had their run led by Tyler Davies 9-3 decision at 132 lb., Simeon Horton’s technical fall at 138 lb., Troy Ferris’ fall in 1:49 at 145 lb. which put Brockport ahead, Bringer’s 6-3 win at 152 lb. and Carson Daly’s 7-2 decision at 160 lb.

All teams now compete in the Section V championships over two weekends with the state meet at the end of February in Albany.
