Blue Devils seniors finish with sweep

Four Brockport seniors played their final regular season home volleyball match and finished with a sweep over Greece Arcadia 25-14, 25-14, 27-25 for their fifth win of the campaign.

An early 8-0 run highlighted by an ace by Michelle Kenward and kills from Destinee Ellison and senior Liz Schultheis staked the Blue Devils to a 10-4 lead in the first game. Senior Kate Kenward had a kill and classmate Kenzie Carter ace as they extended that lead to 17-8 with a 7-0 run.

Ellie Gardner had an ace and a kill in game two while Savannah Bennem, Julia Pacitto and Schultheis added single kills as Brockport jumped out to a 15-5 advantage. Pacitto registered a kill and a block with Schultheis adding a block and Zoe Haines a kill over the final eight points of the win.

The Blue Devils got their offense in high gear in the third game and they needed every point. Five consecutive kills by Pacitto, Aniyah Cheeves (2), Schultheis and Kate Kenward put them up 12-9. Kills on five of six points by Kate Kenward, Schultheis, Haley Sweet and Pacitto made it 19-15 but Arcadia fought back.

Tied 19-19, the teams traded points through 25-25 before Schultheis finished off her final home game in style with a kill and an ace on the final two points.

Pacitto finished with a team-best seven kills and added four assists, three aces and two digs. Schultheis had six kills, seven digs, three aces and three assists, Kate Kenward four kills, Carter a pair of aces and Gardner led with 20 assists.

The Blue Devils had one match remaining at presstime and were expected to be seeded either seventh, eighth or ninth for the start of next week’s Section V playoffs.
