Rangers get Passinault her first coaching victory

Rebounding from a first game 22-25 loss, Spencerport swept the next three 25-23, 25-15, 25-23 over Brockport to give their first year head coach, Jamie Passinault, her first varsity coaching win.

“I thought it would take me more time, but this team has good heart,” the Churchville-Chili and Roberts Wesleyan alumnae said.

The score was tied on 13 separate occasions in the first game including at 17-17 before Blue Devils sophomore Bobbi Cheves knocked down consecutive kills and senior Haley Sweet followed with a put-back to seal the win.

Brockport led by as many as eight points in the second game as senior Ellie Gardner and Sweet each had a pair of kills and Cheves added two aces, but the Rangers whittled away at the deficit as junior Alyssa Falbo had two kills while eighth-grader Jade Sylvester and junior Megan Laubacher each served up an ace to tie the contest 18-18.

The two teams exchanged the lead several more times before the Rangers won on another Sylvester ace.

Spencerport rallied late in game three as well as sophomore Hailey Rooney had nine consecutive service points – four via aces – while Falbo and Laubacher added kills to break a 13-13 tie.

The Blue Devils led the final game 16-7 before the Rangers rallied again. Laubacher and Rooney began the rally combining on a block with Laubacher registering another block and a kill on consecutive points. After an ace by Sylvester, freshman Grace Campion completed the comeback with two kills to tie the game 17-17.

Brockport jumped out to a 23-21 advantage on an Abby Van Gelder ace, but Falbo again tied the game with an ace and Laubacher registered the match winning kill, one of her team-high 12 to go with five blocks.

Rangers sophomore setter Maya Voelkl dished out 38 assists and added five digs.

Brockport was led by Sweet’s 10 kills to go with three aces, Ellie Gardner had a team-best 11 digs to go with her five kills and two aces while Van Gelder had 15 assists.
