Blue Devils sweep Spartans

Brockport spoiled Gates Chili’s lacrosse senior night with an 18-8 win by the boys while the girls came from behind in the final two minutes of regulation in a 5-4 win.

Junior Dylan Vergari scored five goals in the first half and added four more in the second to pace the Blue Devils attack.

His first came just 49 seconds into the contest with an assist by senior Matt Heyden. After Gates Chili tied the game on the next possession, Brockport netted four unanswered goals to finish out the first quarter. Sophomore Chris Parker scored a man-up goal from the side of the net at 5:36, Vergari found the lower right corner 24 seconds later and Hayden tallied twice as Brockport was ahead 5-1 after the first 12 minutes.

The Spartans scored twice early in the second quarter sandwiching another Vergari tally to make it 6-3 Brockport, but the Blue Devils again rattled off four straight goals to pull away. Vergari netted two, senior Jake Davies scored after intercepting a goalie outlet pass at the 30-yard line and Hayden completed his hat trick over a 3:53 span to extend the Blue Devils’ lead to 10-3.

The Spartans scored a man-up goal at 8:48 of the second but Brockport’s Heyden converted a pass from sophomore Cole Beardsley moments after the Blue Devils killed a six-four man-up advantage to close the first half with a seven-goal lead.

Brockport senior Dave D’Ettorre scored twice for the Blue Devils in the second half while Heyden netted his fifth of the contest – a shorthanded effort after a pass from sophomore Derek Tobey – and Vergari added four goals.

Senior goalie Ed Rowley made 13 stops to earn the Blue Devils fifth win of the season.

“We had good movement and good connections,” Vergari said. “We were excited to play Gates Chili again after beating them in overtime last time.”

In the girls game, Brockport sophomore Olivia Grome opened the second with a free possession goal at 10:24 of the first half, but Gates Chili tied the game 1-1 96 seconds later.

After a Juliana Bernie free possession tally at 12:54 put Brockport ahead again 2-1, the Spartans scored three unanswered goals – two in the first half and one at 8:25 of the second half to lead 4-2.

Bernie scored off a right-wing rush at 9:05 to close Brockport within one of the lead. Then, with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, the junior gathered up the ball in her own end, dashed 60 yards and tied the game 4-4 with 1:49 left on the clock.

Brockport lost the ensuing face-off, but was awarded the ball due to a moving pick and Bernie made it count scoring a free possession goal at 23:56 for the game-winner.

“It just all happened; I just put my head in the game,” Bernie said. On the game-winning tally she said, “I wanted to fake up top and go low.”

Brockport sophomore goalie Makayla Laing made five saves in net as the Blue Devils earned their third win of the campaign.
